Nearly 13 million people have been forced to flee since fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in April 2023.
Since then, homes, schools and hospitals have come under attack, amid extensive looting and burning. The health system is rapidly deteriorating. Clinics are struggling to cope with a life-threatening shortage of staff and supplies. Famine has been confirmed in 10 locations, with more areas at risk.
The number of unaccompanied or separated children is also rising – and with it, the risk of being recruited into the conflict, or falling prey to forced labour or human trafficking.
While most people are displaced inside Sudan, over three million have escaped as refugees to neighbouring countries such as South Sudan and Chad. They are arriving at border crossings with little more than the clothes on their backs and urgently need safety and protection.
UNHCR is providing shelter, emergency supplies, clean water, targeted support to address malnutrition and healthcare in Sudan and in neighbouring countries hosting refugees. Our teams are also distributing emergency cash so that vulnerable families can purchase basic needs including food and medicine. We are also working quickly to relocate refugees to safer areas away from borders, and to register families for legal and protection support.

UNHCR is striving to reach extremely vulnerable communities with aid. However, funding cuts are already affecting emergency assistance on the ground. Without further funding, more essential services will shut down, leaving people without access to the most basic forms of support.
